400 cats who would otherwise be homeless and allowed to wander the perilous streets of Nairobi alone have been given shelter by a Nairobi-based lady.

Kibue loved the stray cats so much that she gave up her four-bedroom bungalow for them and moved into a smaller home inside the same property.

“We rescue a lot of kittens that are left in cartons or are just left without a mother. They are just out there without a mother,” said Kibue on KBC.

The Nairobi Feline Sanctuary, established by Kibue, is a haven for cats with some of the top maternity and resting rooms.

Each of the cats has a name, and the bearer of a community development diploma never mixes them up.

Kibue asserts that cats behave in a way that is comparable to that of people. When contacted, one of them responds in a distinctive way; some are gregarious, while others genuinely like having guests.

There are several cats with congenital impairments among Kabue’s feline companions.

To help with reproduction, the facility has a maternity wing for the queen cats. There is a need to manage the population at the sanctuary because a cat may give birth to 48 kittens in a year.

“We stop the reproduction this is because there are many cats who are not living in the best conditions said veterinary doctor Dancun Mwarangu.

Despite the monthly donations that are given to the center, feeding the cats is also a struggle.

“We get some food donated but not enough to take a big difference. Per week they eat 50 kg of cabrio and 70 kgs of minced meat,” she said.

“In a month I spend KSh 250 000 – KSh 280, 000 on their food,” she said.
